Exploring History In and Around Orlando

The Stetson Hat, Thomas Edison and Central Florida

Within an hour’s drive of Orlando in Deland, Florida, stands a beautifully restored mansion that combines history with tales of famous guest.

The Stetson Mansion built in 1886 was a winter residence for John B. Stetson, famed hat maker, his wife Elizabeth and their family. This 10,000 square foot home on 300 acres was Florida’s first luxury estate and host to many famous people and dignitaries including Thomas Edison, president Grover Cleveland and King Edward the 7th. The mansion was one of the first built with Edison’s electric and the original DC Fuse box is intact.

Today the mansion is the home of Michael Solari and J.T Thompson who welcome visitors to their meticulously restored beautiful residence with intricate 3D parquet floors, rare windows made from over 10,000 panes of antique glass and windows shipped from Europe.

Tours are available and visitors are allowed on every inch of the estate, even the owner’s closet. Special event tours include the Quilt Tours displaying local handmade quilts throughout the mansion and the spectacular Christmas tours with intricate and beautiful holiday decorations.
